The AAMC on Oct. 26 submitted comments (PDF) on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) draft policy that would require NIH-supported researchers and institutions to share plain-language, summary-level results with clinical research participants. The AAMC supports the policy’s goals, noting that sharing results can strengthen trust, recruitment, and retention in research. It urged the NIH to engage participants and communities in shaping how summaries are written and delivered and to give institutions flexibility based on study size, risk, and whether participants can be reached. The AAMC also recommended that the NIH coordinate with other Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agencies participating in HHS’ Operation TrialBlazer, including the Food and Drug Administration and the Office for Human Research Protections, so that expectations are consistent across agencies.
