Following enactment of a multi-bill fiscal year (FY) 2026 funding package on Feb. 3, AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton, MD, and Chief Public Policy Officer Danielle Turnipseed, JD, MHSA, MPP, released a statement applauding the House and Senate for passing the FY 2026 Labor-Health and Human Services-Education appropriations bill (P.L. 119-75). The package includes funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Health Resources and Services Administration Title VII health professions and VIII nursing workforce development programs, and other health agencies, as well as extensions of several other health care and public health programs [refer to Washington Highlights, Jan. 23].

The House passed the legislation by a vote of  217-214, following Senate passage on Jan. 30 by a vote of 71-29. The measure ended the partial government shutdown that began Jan. 31 after a continuing resolution expired. Funding for the Department of Homeland Security was extended through a separate two-week continuing resolution expiring Feb. 13.
