This week, June 8-12, the AAMC and the nation’s medical schools and academic health systems and teaching hospitals celebrated Academic Medicine Week to recognize the unparalleled contributions of academic medicine to improving the health of patients and communities across the country. In addition to a congressional resolution formally designating the week, the AAMC held a reception on Capitol Hill to showcase how AAMC members are shaping the future of health care. Attendees learned firsthand how AAMC-member institutions drive innovation and serve as economic engines for local and regional communities.
In the lead-up to Academic Medicine Week, the AAMC announced four recipients of its Champion of Academic Medicine Award. This award recognizes the extraordinary leadership of the awardees in bolstering the health care workforce, investing in medical research, and advancing key priorities for the nation’s academic health systems and teaching hospitals, medical schools, physician faculty, and the patients and communities they serve. This year’s recipients include Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), and Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.). The AAMC will present the awards alongside leaders of member academic health systems and teaching hospitals, and medical schools in the coming months.
