Susan Cato is a strategic communications leader focused on creative thinking and collaboration to ensure visibility and make meaningful impact in unique and innovative ways.
Cato and her team manage the AAMC’s communications and marketing strategy, including earned, paid, and social media; public relations, communications, and outreach; public opinion research; marketing strategy; marketing campaigns; brand management; virtual community; website strategy and management; content strategy; user experience and accessibility; and publishing.
She joined the association in 2020 as the senior director of digital communications and was appointed acting chief communications and marketing officer in 2022. She formally assumed the role in January 2023.
Prior to joining the AAMC, Cato spent 20+ years leading digital strategy and engagement efforts for industry associations, professional societies, and nonprofit organizations; building and engaging communities; creating valuable content; hosting memorable experiences; and identifying ways to foster connection through shared purpose and co-creation. Her work has won numerous awards, including the 2018 Gold Excel Award for Plantae’s “Taproot” podcast and the 2021 Gold Excel Award for the AAMC’s strategic plan website. In 2021, she received the Kat Turner Spirit of Excellence Award for her contributions to the AAMC.
