Background

This year’s terminations of biomedical research grants funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is unprecedented in the history of the agency. This brief utilizes available data as of May 20, 2025, and summarizes the current state and impact of NIH grant terminations on U.S. institutions, with a focus on medical schools and hospitals, drawing from a dynamic database that is tracking grant terminations.

Highlights

U.S. institutions have lost a total of $2,480,924,288 in funding.

Of the 1,424 terminated grants, 39% were NIH R01 grants.

160 active clinical trials have been affected by the cuts.

Correction: In the data brief on May 27th, there was an error in the "Impact on Clinicals Trials" section. The third sentence incorrectly stated that the number of terminated grants funding active clinical trials that mentioned LGBTQ+ population was 95. The correct number is 54 grants. This correction is reflected in the updated data brief PDF linked on the page.
