The health care reform legislation signed into law by President
Obama, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R.
3590) as amended by P.L. 111-152 (H.R. 4872) includes numerous
provisions related to the health workforce. This paper presents
a summary of the provisions in the new legislation. Section
numbers from the legislation are included to facilitate review
of the relevant passages in greater detail.

In 2008, the Center released The Complexities of Physician
Supply and Demand: Projections Through 2025 before the
passage of health care reform legislation. The Center has
updated its projections to take into account the passage of
reform as well as updated data.

State Physician Workforce Data Book (PDF)
This updated report examines the active physician supply in
each state, as well as current medical school enrollment and
physicians in graduate medical education (GME) programs. The
report includes tables with the actual numbers that are presented
visually in maps and bar charts.
2008
Physician Specialty Data (PDF)
This updated report provides comparative data on active physicians
and physicians-in-training in specialties with more than 2,500
active physicians. It includes data on type of education and
location, age, and gender by specialty as well as trends over
time in the number in training and practicing in each specialty.
The report includes figures and tables and will be published
biennially.
