Table C8. Full-Time Faculty-Appointment Status at U.S. Medical Schools for Residents Who Completed Residencies, by Specialty and Rank

Residents Who Completed Training, 2010-19

The table below displays the number and percentage of individuals who completed residency training from 2010 through 2019, are not currently active in any GME program, and have a full-time faculty appointment at a U.S. MD-granting school, by ACGME-accredited specialty and subspecialty and by faculty-appointment rank. Data are for graduates of MD-granting and DO-granting U.S. and Canadian schools and of international medical schools, for the most recently completed ACGME-accredited specialty and subspecialty. For example, 251 of the 1,328 individuals (18.9%) who last completed residency training from 2010 through 2019 in Allergy and Immunology currently hold an assistant professor full-time faculty appointment at a U.S. MD-granting school. Part-time faculty appointments are not included. Counts and percentages shown for specialties do not include counts and percentages for the related subspecialties. Selected Finding: Of those individuals who completed residency training from 2010 through 2019 and who currently hold a full-time faculty appointment at a U.S. MD-granting school, 77.4% hold appointments at the assistant professor level; this is 15.3% of the entire cohort that completed residency training.
