Action Plan 8: Advance Knowledge Through the AAMC Research and Action Institute

Executive Director Atul Grover, MD, PhD, explains how the AAMC Research and Action Institute is leading the charge, tackling these issues head-on to make effective change and improve the health of people everywhere.

The academic medicine community, policymakers, and others turn to the AAMC for information, data, and advice on countless issues.

AAMC research and analyses inform policy and practice across the missions and institutions of academic medicine. The AAMC Research and Action Institute brings together leaders from the nation’s medical schools, teaching hospitals, and research institutions, along with other experts, to tackle complex health policy issues and develop straightforward solutions to improve health.

Where we are now

  • The institute convenes and consults an external advisory committee comprised of national health experts across multiple sectors who further the institute’s ability to provide a straightforward, nonpartisan, practical approach to policy issues.
  • The institute regularly publishes health policy research in issue briefs and data snapshots, including a series on health care costs in the context of the complex financing and delivery system in the United States.
  • The institute examines timely issues for policymakers, such as barriers to mental health care, value-based care benefits, rural health care access, and the implications of policy changes on the physician workforce. Visit Our Work to see all the institute’s most recent research and publications.
  • The institute shares ideas and data at conferences, round tables, and other events, including those convened by other think tanks, and sparks conversation through social media and other communication channels.
  • In 2023, the institute supported and co-hosted a breakfast salon to discuss health care workforce and payment challenges in mental health. The event was convened by the Alliance for Health Policy.
  • In 2023 and 2024, Executive Director Atul Grover, MD, PhD contributed to a series of expert roundtables hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) on policy solutions to deliver behavioral health integration. The roundtables informed the BPC’s publication, “Strengthening the Integrated Care Workforce,” and were the basis for a public panel discussion in which Grover participated as an expert panelist. He also participated as an expert panelist for a discussion at the 42nd annual JP Morgan Healthcare Conference focused on current and pending health care reform policies in diagnostic medicine and its impact on academic health systems.

What happens next

The AAMC Research and Action Institute will continue to lay the groundwork for addressing the U.S. health care system through policy analysis. We will also focus on providing original research and issue briefs that will synthesize complex issues in our health care system and propose possible steps forward to improve the health of all. The institute’s work will ultimately aid in expanding the reach of the AAMC to lead in areas beyond academic medicine.
