RIME submissions are due January 18, 2021.

The AAMC is accepting submissions for Learn Serve Lead 2021: The AAMC Annual Meeting. Learn Serve Lead (LSL) is open to all those engaged in advancing academic medicine and brings together our medical school and teaching hospital community from across campuses, across disciplines, and across missions.

The call for medical education submissions consists of three types:

  • Sessions on Medical Education
  • Medical Education Abstracts – Innovation and Research
  • Research in Medical Education (RIME) Research and Review Papers

Work focused on a wide variety of themes incorporating a broad representation of topics, institutions, and presenters will be selected for presentation.

Sessions on Medical Education

Sessions on Medical Education represent an opportunity to examine broad medical education topics from a variety of perspectives, engender discussion, and engage diverse voices. Sessions may consist of multiple presentations on a single theme, or a single facilitated activity. The submission format requires a detailed plan for the session including learning objectives, a description of the session, speakers, and a facilitator. Sessions on Medical Education submissions should describe in detail how the session will generate rich dialogue from multiple perspectives and involve both presenters and attendees.

Session Submission Format

Session submissions are limited to 800 words and not to exceed 8,750 characters with spaces and not including title, authors, institutional affiliations and references. Sessions on Medical Education include the following elements:

  • Title: Provide an informative session title
  • Topic Short Description: Introduce the issue to be discussed and why it is a timely and important topic to the broader educational community
  • Presenters: List presenters, their institutional affiliations, and their role in the session
  • Facilitator: Identify the facilitator and their institution
  • Learning Objectives: List 3 – 5 learning objectives of the session
  • Session Plan: Describe the session plan in detail, with specific attention to how the audience will be engaged through discussion
  • List of 3 key words: Provide 3 key words that articulate the focus of your submission
  • References: List references (limit to 5)

Session Review Criteria

Criterion Description
Topic of Importance Topic is relevant and timely for a national/international audience
Appropriate Objectives Learning objectives are both achievable and desirable
Plan to Promote Discussion The session plan is clearly described and has a high probability of generating a rich discussion of the issues presented

Medical Education Abstracts (formerly highlights in medical education)

Medical Education Abstracts are reports on important work worth sharing with the medical education community. Abstracts will be presented in one of two formats: oral or poster. The presentation format will be determined by the program planning committee based on thematic content of the abstracts.

Innovation Abstract

An Innovation Abstract is a report on a program, project, or other unique educational experience that is sufficiently developed to provide valuable lessons and insights worth sharing with the broad medical education community. Abstracts should contain an explanation of why the innovation is timely, keeping in mind that topics which may be new at a local level, may not be new at the national level. Abstracts must contain some data to be eligible for consideration.

Research Abstract

A Research Abstract is a report on a completed empirical investigation that contributes to medical education research and practice. In contrast to Research in Medical Education (RIME) Research Papers, the results of smaller scale/single institution pilot projects, exploratory studies, or components of larger projects may be submitted as a Research Abstract. Presenting a project or part of a project as a Research Abstract does not preclude submitting the entire project as a RIME Research Paper in a subsequent year.

Abstract Submission Format

Abstract submissions are limited to 600 words and not to exceed 6,900 characters with spaces and not including title, authors, institutional affiliations and references.

The proposal must include the following:

  • Title: Provide an informative session title
  • Authors: Authors and institutions
  • Purpose: What problems or issues have you identified and addressed?
  • Approach/Methods: What did you do?
  • Results/Outcomes: What did you find?
  • Discussion: What did you discover as a result of your efforts?
  • Significance: What implications do these lessons hold for now or the future?
  • List of 3 key words: Provide 3 key words that articulate the focus of your submission
  • References: Limit to 5

Abstract Review Criteria

Criterion Description
Topic of Importance Topic is relevant and timely for a national/international audience
Approach The authors effectively explain an approach that solves the problem identified
Interpretation Results or outcomes are presented in a clear manner; for research highlights, discussion is grounded in the literature
Significance The authors provide evidence that the findings have implications for now or the future

Research in Medical Education (RIME) Research and Review Papers

Research in Medical Education (RIME) is a forum promoting the transformation of health care through medical education innovation and research.  RIME consists of research papers describing completed medical education research and review papers synthesizing existing research. Click here to submit your RIME proposal.

For 2021, please see the complete RIME Submission Instructions for more details. Most articles for the journal are between 3,000 and 4,000 words long; for qualitative studies, longer manuscripts may be acceptable, and authors are welcome to provide rationale for the length.

RIME submissions fall into two categories: Research Papers and Review Papers

  1. Research Papers describe completed medical education research.
  2. Review Papers synthesize existing research and provide direction for future research and practice.

For RIME 2021, we particularly encourage the following types of Research Papers and Review Papers: 

  • Underrepresented in Medicine Perspectives and Authors: We encourage work from perspectives and authors that are underrepresented in medical education literature (underrepresented in medicine means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population). 
  • Trainees Authors: We encourage submissions from trainees including learners enrolled in graduate degree programs in health professions education (e.g., Master of Health Professions Education) or in education research fellowships (e.g., surgical education research fellowship). 

Note: When submitting work falling in either category (1) Underrepresented in Medicine Perspectives and Authors or (2) Trainee Authors – should check the appropriate box in the submission portal to indicate these attributes of their authors or papers.

RIME Requirements for Accepted Papers

  • At least one author of all accepted papers must register and attend the 2021 AAMC Learn Serve Lead Meeting.
  • Research and review papers must comply with Academic Medicine’s formatting and ethical requirements. For studies or evaluations involving human participants (including students, residents, and faculty), it is the author's responsibility to provide details of ethical approval for the research in the manuscript (in the Method section), including but not limited to the name of the approving committee (e.g., Institutional Review Board, Research Ethics Board) and the name of the institution at which approval was granted. (Please note that at many U.S. institutions, a decision of "exempt" must be made by an Institutional Review Board or an individual designated by the institution but may not be made by the investigator.) These details must be provided in manuscript, or the manuscript will not be reviewed. Authors should review the RIME 2021 Submission Instructions while preparing their manuscript for submission.

RIME Supplement of Academic Medicine

RIME papers will be published in a Supplement of Academic Medicine, allowing for several benefits to the medical education community including:

  • Increasing the total number of medical education research articles published in the journal each year;
  • Continuing the longstanding tradition of RIME Committee autonomy with respect to the content of the program and the timeline for submissions; and
  • Providing access to all RIME articles in the Supplement on the web and on Academic Medicine’s mobile app free of charge. In keeping with recent research on the positive effects of open access publishing, the Committee expects that free access to RIME papers may increase future citation rates.

In addition, the RIME Committee conducted an analysis of historical citation statistics and found that citation rates for Supplement papers are not statistically significantly different than from citation rates for regular issue papers.

The RIME Supplement will be available in electronic format only - on the web and on Academic Medicine’s mobile app free of charge.

RIME Awards

  • New Investigator Award – To encourage submissions of research and review papers from individuals who have no prior involvement with RIME activities, a New Investigator Award will be selected each year. To qualify for consideration for the New Investigator Award, the first author must not have been the first author of a previous RIME paper. If an author wishes to have a research and/or review paper considered for this award, he/she must check the New Investigator box on the Research and/or Review Submission Form.
  • Outstanding Research Paper Award – An award for the best research paper will also be selected from among all the accepted papers.

Intro and Conceptual Framework How well do the authors state the aim of the study and the gap they are trying to fill?
Methods How well do the authors detail the study such that it could be replicated?
Results How well do the authors present relevant data/outcomes based on the described analysis strategy?
Discussion and Conclusions How well do the authors interpret the results of their study?
Clarity of Writing Have the authors written a paper that is easy to understand?
