    Understanding Gender Nonconformity in Childhood and Adolescence

    Description:
    Transgender adolescents face many challenges including lack of family or community support and sometimes self-harm or suicide. Pediatricians and subspecialists can work together to provide gender-affirming care while assuring the safety and well-being of transgender adolescents. This session will provide an overview of the unique challenges of adolescent transition including the intricacies of delaying puberty, hormonal therapy, and surgery. Practical tips for pediatricians to support transgender adolescents and their families will be shared. Resources from nationally recognized transgender programs and organizations will also be reviewed.
