D., M.P.A., for individuals interested in or just starting an academic career. Interviewed by Brandi Kaye Freeman, M.D., Dr. Williams offers young faculty strategies to prepare for developing pathways for success in academic medicine.
Valerie N. Williams, Ph. D., M.P.A., is the vice provost for academic affairs and faculty development for the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Dr. Williams serves as the principal investigator and director for the Center for Learning and Leadership/University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service. Dr. Williams’ principal teaching and coaching roles include long-standing work with health sciences center early and mid-career faculty members. She has served as faculty member for the AAMC's professional development program for women in medicine (early and mid-career seminars), for the AAMC's Minority Faculty Professional Development program, and as a coach and faculty member for the AAMC's Team Works! program. She is a past-chair for the AAMC's Group on Faculty Affairs, and is an elected member of the AAMC's board of directors and currently serves as past chair. In 2014, she received the Carole J. Bland Phronesis Award from the AAMC's Group on Faculty Affairs.
Brandi Kaye Freeman, M.D., is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and director of research for the Pediatric Call Center at the Children’s Hospital of Colorado. She completed pediatric residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and training in health policy and health services research through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She has served the Student National Medical Association as national president and the National Medical Association as postgraduate physician trustee. Dr. Freeman’s research interests include health disparities, the use of technology to improve communication between physicians and parents/patients and physician workforce diversity.
Learning Objectives:
