Writing a successful grant is critical to career advancement. Research shows that minority faculty members often experience differential success with grant applications. In fact, “minority researchers in the United States consistently win NIH funding at lower rates than their peers,” according to an article published in Science in 2011.

The AAMC’s Grant Writers Coaching Group for NIH Awards program supports minority faculty in writing successful grants. The program is designed for faculty who are actively working on an NIH Career Development (K or R) proposal.

The goal of the Grant Writers Coaching Group is to complement existing support that the faculty member has to submit a competitive proposal. This program is comprised of four primary activities: (1) orientation webinar; (2) in-person workshop; (3) individual consultation; and (4) virtual coach and peer review sessions.

Take advantage of this unique program that supports racial and ethnic minority faculty in improving critical writing skills to strengthen grant proposals and increase diversity in academic medicine.

Participation involves:

  • Submission of draft application materials prior to the conference
  • A one-day in-person workshop
  • An individual one-on-one virtual meeting with a coach
  • Follow-up bi-weekly group webinars to facilitate ongoing review and discussion about proposals for 2-3 months (July-October 2024) or possibly longer depending on the participant's needs and interests

Eligibility:

Our target audience includes faculty who are underrepresented in medicine, however all faculty, regardless of race or ethnicity, are welcome to apply. Priority consideration will be given to individuals registered for the 2024 Minority Faculty Leadership Development Seminar (MinFac) or past participants of MinFac (date of attendance will be confirmed).
