Information Regarding the Upcoming Merger of VSAS® and GHLO®

We are pleased to announce that Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS®) and Global Health Learning Opportunities (GHLO®) will be merging in mid-January to form a single program called AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™. The program will combine the capabilities of VSAS (domestic mobility) and GHLO (international mobility) and include more streamlined application processing along with an expanded team. The new VSAS application service will include additional features such as:

  • The ability for institutions to custom build catalogs with electives and requirements, based on student type.
  • Institutions can select a pre-set number of applications to be received before an elective automatically closes.
  • The ability for institutions to distinguish which required documents are needed in order to make an academic decision (pre-decision) and which documents must be submitted after an offer is made (post-decision) requirements.
  • All applications forwarded to host institutions will have all required documents attached.
  • Students will be able to very easily track the status of all their applications with the new student status bar.

The development of Visiting Student Learning Opportunities will benefit and impact U.S. and international institutions and students.

Information for Institutions

The combined program will offer both a U.S. component (formerly VSAS) and an international component (formerly GHLO). Through AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities, your institution can choose to take advantage of the following program options:

U.S. Network:

  • Host Institutions (Receive Students) - offer electives to students attending medical schools in the U.S. (formerly VSAS).
  • Home Institutions (Send Your Students) - enable your students to participate in electives at participating U.S. institutions (formerly VSAS).

Global Network:

  • Host Institutions (Receive Students) - offer electives/learning opportunities to eligible international students (formerly GHLO).
  • Home Institutions (Send Your Students) - enable your students to participate in electives/learning opportunities at participating international host sites (formerly GHLO).

In addition to clinical rotations for final-year students, international offerings also include community-based global health experiences that are available to students during both pre-clinical and clinical years.

NOTE FOR NON-U.S. INSTITUTIONS: Current GHLO participating institutions will be part of the Global Network. Your students will only be able to apply for opportunities at host institutions that are also part of the Global Network. Institutions based in the U.S. can choose to be part of the domestic and/or global networks.

How can institution users receive training?

The Visiting Student team will provide comprehensive trainings on the application service, including a demonstration of the live system, to help ensure a smooth transition for our participating institutions. The trainings will cover both the U.S. and Global networks.

For home institution users who support their students in obtaining away rotations:
The session will cover the setup and management of the system, as well as processing your students' outgoing applications.

**These trainings are tailored to non-U.S. users or U.S. institution users who have used the GHLO application service.

For host institution users whose duties include the setup and management of the system:
The session will cover the setup and management of the system, including creating and managing your institution’s users, preferences, email templates, and electives.

**These trainings are tailored to non-U.S. users or U.S. institution users who have used the GHLO application service.

For host institution users who process incoming visiting student applications, including departmental users:
The session will cover reviewing, scheduling, and notifying applicants of decisions.

**These trainings are tailored to non-U.S. users or U.S. institution users who have used the GHLO application service.

Information for Students

With the merger of VSAS and GHLO, students will have more opportunities, better support, and an improved experience.

The transition process is intended to be simple and stress-free for students. Beginning on January 22, 2018, students will be able to access the application service to discover and apply for electives.

Students should be aware of the following:

  • Students will be unable to access their VSAS/GHLO accounts beginning December 31, 2017. Students with incomplete applications should submit them by December 30, 2017.
  • Students will pay fees based on the number of electives they apply to, regardless of the number of dates selected for each. The first three electives are covered by a base fee of $40 USD. Each elective thereafter is $15 USD.

Opportunities for U.S. and International Students

The electives available to you will be based on the following factors:

  • the roles and network your home institution has elected for participation in the program,
  • the availability of elective offerings by host institutions.

For example, if your school has elected to participate in the Global Network and you are eligible to take electives at international institutions, electives at international institutions will be displayed.

In addition, your institution will indicate if you are a clinical or pre-clinical student and the electives displayed will be for your specific phase.
