Medical students at time of graduation need specific clinical skills to be successful during internship. We recognized that a vulnerable time in patient care is the time of discharge from an acute care setting, and more effort is needed in teaching the discharge process to graduating students. Using work already published by colleagues in MedEdPORTAL, we created a self-study module with the following learning objectives:
- Describe the management of rehabilitative services in various settings
- Report basic characteristics of the various practice settings
- Match appropriate discharge recommendations to care settings that meet the unique needs of patient cases
- Identify components of a well written discharge summary
- Evaluate three discharge summaries using a simple rubric
This module is introduced through a video didactic that accompanies a student guidebook. Students are encouraged to work in small groups to discuss cases and discharge summaries. Students submit their guidebook with answers onto a learning platform. An answer key guidebook is released at a later date to allow students to compare their work with a standard.
