COD Collective Action Initiative on Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

New section

New section

The Council of Deans (COD) is undertaking a new Collective Action Initiative on Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within AAMC-member medical schools. This initiative was designed to respond to the academic medicine community’s desire for concrete actions and accountability from medical school leaders to accelerate meaningful change that supports DEI and anti-racism efforts across U.S. medical schools. The initiative reflects a national leadership commitment to DEI and aligns with Action Plan 3 of the AAMC Strategic Plan, “Equip Medical Schools and Teaching Hospitals to Become More Inclusive, Equitable Organizations.”

The initiative is reserved for COD members who sign up to participate by Jan. 7, 2022. Participating COD members will receive complimentary access to the Diversity, Inclusion, Culture, and Equity (DICE) Inventory and must commit to returning the completed tool to the AAMC by May 1.

Effective implementation of the DICE Inventory will require collaboration with individuals from across the institution. Deans should share this webpage and its materials with their teams to develop an approach for completing the DICE Inventory. This webpage and its materials should not be shared beyond participating COD members and their implementation teams.

Initiative Timeline and Deliverables

Sign-up Period: Dec. 8, 2021 – Jan. 7, 2022

Pre-administration Period: Jan. 8-31

Deans should use this time to review preliminary resources, communicate about the initiative internally, assemble teams of diverse and engaged individuals from across their institutions, and schedule a series of reflective and evidence-based discussions with their implementation teams to collaboratively complete the DICE Inventory.

Administration Period: Feb. 1 – May 1

The DICE Inventory will be delivered to participating deans on Feb. 1, and deans must return the completed DICE Inventory Excel file to Valerie Dandar, director of medical school operations, by May 1. The data submitted back to the AAMC will be deidentified and stored on a secure server to which only the research team has access.

Development of Deliverables: May onward

The AAMC will create a report of the aggregated national data that analyzes trends in DEI policies, programs, and practices across participating medical schools. The data may be used by various AAMC groups, including the COD and the Group on Diversity and Inclusion, to develop future professional development offerings. The data will also inform the development of new resources through Action Plan 3 to support all AAMC-member medical schools in becoming more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organizations.

Preparation and Implementation Resources

The following resources will help you communicate about the initiative with your medical school community and effectively implement the DICE Inventory. Please review these materials with your teams before implementing the DICE Inventory.
