AAMC Praises Agreement to Unify Accreditation System for Residency Training

Washington, D.C., February 26, 2014AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., issued the following statement about the agreement among the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) to establish a single accreditation system for graduate medical education:

“The AAMC applauds the ACGME, AOA, and AACOM for the work that led to their commitment to develop a single accreditation system for graduate medical education training programs. As a member of the ACGME, the AAMC believes that a strong unified system is critical to the nation’s health in today’s changing health care environment. As the system develops, we expect that it will continue to raise the quality of graduate medical education for new physicians, ensuring a consistently high quality health care workforce for the future. The growing collaboration between the allopathic and osteopathic physician communities will only serve to improve patient care for all Americans.”
