AAMC Concerned about New Simpson/Bowles Proposal
Washington, D.C., April 19, 2013—AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., issued the following statement on the Bipartisan Path Forward to Securing America's Future, released today by former Sen. Alan Simpson and former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles:
“The AAMC appreciates the efforts of Sen. Simpson and Mr. Bowles in their proposal to ensure a fiscally sound nation in which all Americans have access to the health care services they need. Continuing to prioritize Medicare physician payment reform is an important step toward addressing this critical challenge.
However, we remain troubled that the proposed cuts to teaching hospitals will seriously jeopardize the ability of America’s medical schools and teaching hospitals to educate and train enough physicians to care for an aging, growing nation. We are also concerned that specific cuts to hospital outpatient services could limit access to care. While we support a thoughtful approach to deficit reduction, these efforts need to be part of a package that includes sustained investment in training the next generation of health professionals and supports the unique environment of teaching hospitals where complex clinical care, training, and discovery can occur together.
Without continued investment in doctor training, there will not be enough doctors to provide care for the nation’s growing and aging population. Policymakers must work together toward a plan that avoids cuts that will endanger access to care now and for years to come.”
