AAMC Infographic Shows How Medical Schools and Teaching Hospitals Are Improving Patient Care Through Medical Research and Education

The AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) has released an infographic illustrating the unique role that the nation’s medical schools and teaching hospitals play in the health care system. The graphic includes quick facts and statistics that underscore the role of academic medicine in educating and training tomorrow’s doctors, conducting pioneering research to discover new treatments and cures, and improving patient care.
The infographic is a helpful visual tool for showing how medical schools and teaching hospitals work together to achieve the three missions of education, patient care, medical research. This illustration also is a valuable resource for explaining the unique and critical role of academic medicine to policymakers, journalists, and other key audiences.
Highlights from the infographic include:
The nation’s nearly 400 major teaching hospitals train 80,000 residents in primary care and specialty areas each year.
AAMC-member teaching hospitals provide approximately 25 percent of clinical care and nearly 40 percent of charity care.
