Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®) Advisory Committee

April 2015

The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®) advisory committee convenes in September and February of each application cycle to discuss user feedback, system improvements, proposed changes, and other issues pertaining to optimizing the residency and fellowship application service. Committee members reflect a diverse group of stakeholders including United States undergraduate and graduate medical trainees, International Medical Graduates, medical schools, residency program directors, and NRMP and ERAS staff.

As the ERAS staff continually seeks to maintain a service that is responsive to user needs, an ongoing discussion about methods for improvement remains a core discussion at each biannual meeting. Feedback gathered from 4th year medical students who participated in the 2015 Match was largely positive. Suggestions for improvement centered on mobile devices accessibility and browser compatibility. Student comments reflected the need for features that would facilitate faster communication with programs on time-sensitive matters such as interview scheduling and application updates.

Upcoming changes to ERAS 2016 will address many of these and other issues that have been previously expressed by students, such as improved browser compatibility and the ability to assign letters of recommendation by each document rather than by each program. While an outright mobile phone app will not be part of next year’s application cycle, the improved browser compatibility will facilitate accessibility by mobile device. Additionally, Gold Humanism Honors Society status will be formally recognized within the application.

Finally, ERAS staff presented a tour of the latest iteration of the ERAS system including the Dean’s Office Workstation, Program Director’s Workstation, and MyERAS components. The committee reviewed the process and timeline for this year’s Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP).
