Joining Forces Initiative

As part of the Joining Forces initiative that is sponsored by the White House, the AAMC again is sponsoring Joining Forces Wellness Week (JFWW). The aim of JFWW is to continue raising awareness in the academic medicine community about the nuanced health and wellness needs of veterans, service members and their families. This contributes to our mission to improve the health of all.

We encourage OSR reps to initiate and implement projects at any time throughout the year, but suggest considering a special event during Joining Forces Wellness Week November 9-13, 2015. Take stock of what is going on at your school and in your community. Identify a gap you can fill and then create a program or project to address that gap.

OSR Joining Forces Projects

What’s Joining Forces?

A White House campaign to improve the education, employment and wellness of our nation’s veterans, service members, and their families. The AAMC is leading the effort in the wellness area to raise awareness about the unique health needs veterans face.

  • More than 100 U.S. medical schools have pledged to commit resources to the Joining Forces initiative. These endeavors will enrich medical education and train physicians to care for military service members, veterans, and their families. Our veterans and service members face unique health issues health and that require healthcare providers to aware of the nuanced health and
    wellness needs of these patients.
  • The AAMC conducted a survey assess the efforts of medical school education on health topics for this patient population. Serving Those Who Serve America Joining Forces: Results of an AAMC Survey  highlights the survey results and AAMC’s recommendations.
  • To begin address the gaps found from the survey, the AAMC instituted Joining Forces Wellness Week (JFWW) in 2012. This week-long initiative established by the AAMC, aims to heighten awareness about the health needs of nation’s veterans, service members, and families and elevate the role that medical schools and teaching hospitals play in serving this community. It is now a collaborative effort that is co-sponsored by the White House Joining Forces staff and the Center for Deployment Psychology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and many other health education associations.

Effectively Utilizing the Electronic Residency Application Service

The residency application cycle is upon us and the majority of medical students will be utilizing the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS ®) to submit applications to residency programs. To provide students with an opportunity to learn more about how to most effectively utilize ERAS® and to ask staff members questions, the AAMC hosted a live webinar for students on July 19.
