Leading Information Technology in Academic Medicine (formerly GIR Leadership Institute)

Whether you are looking for a transformational experience for your IT career as you aspire to be a leader in your organization or simply eager to network within the academic medicine community, the Leading Information Technology in Academic Medicine Seminar is for you.

Designed for those who work in information technology, informatics, data analytics, security administration, operations, and those who are new to the academic health center environment, this interactive learning and networking event focuses on developing and strengthening your skills in:

  • Defining Leadership: What’s the difference between leading and managing? How do I make the transition from being a contributor to a leader? How can I build my leadership presence and credibility?
  • Communicating Effectively: What are the tools and best practices that will help me succeed in giving feedback, implementing change, and working with others as a leader?
  • Working Through Differences: Personality Types at Work: What is your personality type according to Myers-Briggs? How does this impact your leadership style? What are strategies for you to work effectively with people with different personality types?
  • Understanding the Business and Cultural Dynamics of Academic Medicine: How can you work more effectively with your Dean? How can you be more familiar with the culture, goals and challenges of the three mission areas of academic medicine? How can IT and data/informatics contribute to the success of each mission area?

You will also benefit from learning and networking with other professionals who work in information technology to drive the growth and success of medical schools, teaching hospitals, and health systems. To manage these rapidly expanding areas, organizations need visionary leaders who understand the complex responsibilities required to serve and advance academic medicine and this seminar equips you with invaluable skills to accomplish just that.

In its 14th year, this three-and-a-half-day seminar has graduated close to 450 fellows who are shaping the future of IT and data/informatics in AAMC constituent institutions.

Participants are guaranteed to leave the program with the knowledge, insight, and tools needed to support and advance the IT and data/informatics practices, policies, and services within complex multi-mission health organizations.

Application & Fees

The 2019 registration fee was $2,500 and included payment for the three and a half day seminar, all program materials, four breakfasts, four lunches, refreshment breaks, two networking receptions, and a sightseeing tour of D.C. by private coach bus. The application fee did not include travel, hotel accommodations or dinners.
