Message from the GSA National Past Chair

I am both honored and excited to serve as National Chair of the Group on Student Affairs Steering Committee for 2015 - 2016. Over the years, I have been privileged to work with and learn from so many dedicated and talented individuals serving on GSA committees, in regional leadership roles, within the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and in the front lines at our institutions. We have wonderful colleagues who are thoughtful, dedicated, creative, and always available for consultation and support.

The GSA, working with the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) and other groups across AAMC, provide many ways for our members to engage in our vibrant community. Like you, my introduction to the GSA began by searching this website and attending regional and then national meetings. Getting involved at the regional and national levels has been an incredible learning experience, allowing me to expand my skills and circle of support.

We have continued challenges over the next year; the Match process is increasingly complex, making advising more complicated. Student debt, along with increasing regulatory standards in financial aid and student records continues to require attention. The new MCAT brings both opportunities and unknowns, while the learning environment stays on our radar. Diversity and Holistic Review are still priorities, as is our own development as professionals – and our supports.

We will continue to address these important matters. I encourage you to explore new opportunities and be active at meetings and on the listserve. Please share your concerns and creative solutions to our common issues to help us move forward with our missions. If you are new to the GSA, join us in serving all of our constituents. I look forward to a year of learning, serving, and leading our wonderful group!
