How We Turn Academics into Leaders

We offer and have mandated leadership training and yet it doesn’t seem to stick. Some of our academics are good leaders, but many, and some very critical ones to our future, are not. What are strategies for delivering these skills? Are we hopelessly naïve in thinking we can change people? Or does this dilemma speak to how we pick our academic hires who have leadership positions? Unlike business, however, people do not go to medical school to manage people or manage change across an organization. Yet increasingly that is what medical school faculty in leadership positions are being asked to do.

The GBA Emerging Issues Committee and the GFA co-sponsored a teleconference with Cathy Wood, MBA, Vice Chair for Finance and Administration, Department of Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina and Janis Apted Yadiny, Associate Vice President, Faculty & Academic Career Enhancement, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center on turning academics into leaders.
