Chief Medical Officers (CMO) Leadership Academy

This exclusive, 18-month executive training program explores the role, responsibilities, and influence of the CMO as a high-functioning member of the C-suite. Designed by a committee of well-respected and experienced academic medicine CMOs, this program uses a blended learning approach that combines didactics, e-learning, independent study, and peer and executive mentorship to help participants develop and enhance knowledge and skills in the areas of administration and leadership in order to successfully serve in the CMO role. Designed by CMOs from teaching hospitals and health systems, this program further develops the administrative knowledge and skills of current CMOs who are within the first three (3) years of the position and better prepares senior physician leaders interested in the CMO career path to manage the general complexities of the role. Using a blended learning approach that combines didactics, e-learning, and independent study as well as peer and executive mentorship, participants will advance their administrative and leadership proficiencies to successfully meet both the clinical and business demands associated with the CMO role in today’s healthcare environment. Changes in the health care landscape are transforming the future of care delivery. Academic medicine is uniquely positioned to recognize the need for change and serve as a conduit for change. In order to meet the unprecedented scope of health care challenges, both today and in the future, academic medicine leaders need to be equipped with the knowledge and strategies to unravel salient health care issues and matters. 

The 2018 Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Chief Medical Officers Group (CMOG) and Group on Faculty Practice (GFP) Joint Meeting brings together academic medicine leaders – Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), Practice Plan Leaders, and Chief Medical Information Officers (CMIOs) –to discuss critical issues and share best practices for implementing complex changes at their institutions as well as across academic medicine. With thought-provoking plenaries, interactive breakout sessions, and significant opportunities to network, meeting attendees will return to their institutions with a deeper understanding of issues facing academic medicine and best practices for addressing challenges and leading change.

Meeting attendees will:

  • Identify strategies to using e-Consults.
  • Explore the different types compensation models.
  • Examine the cause of and learn about evidence based approaches to address high cost of physician burnout to our institutions.
  • Hear from an expert insights into value-based payment reform.
  • Network with other leaders at academic institutions to learn about best practices, strategies, and approaches to addressing issues
