Clinical Investigator Kick-start (ClIK): A formative evaluation of a pilot program to energize clinical faculty driven research at UT Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA)

Project Description: While engaging clinicians in research is essential to the pursuit of evidence-based medicine and the delivery of high-quality care, multiple barriers exist. In 2014, we completed a research strategic plan to “realize effective models of clinical care delivery and education with innovations from our research mission.” One priority is to build upon our existing clinical and care delivery research strengths by increasing engagement of UT Medicine, UTHSCSA’s faculty medical practice. A multi-investigator pilot program was developed in support of this priority; applicants consisted of 108 PIs and Co-PIs; 37 were MDs and only seven were the primary PI. This suggests that the best means of structuring a pilot program to optimize clinical faculty research participation remains to be determined. To this end, we will conduct a formative evaluation to identify barriers and facilitators to engaging in research within our clinical care community and utilize a systems approach to collaboratively develop strategies to address barriers. Aim 1 – Authentically engage UT Medicine faculty to (1) identify training and resource barriers and facilitators to engaging in clinical research and (2) solicit input to tailor our pilot program to provide effective resources and support for clinicians performing research; Aim 2 - Adapt and implement the “ClIK” pilot program; and Aim 3 - Develop a performance monitoring system, including metrics and milestones, to evaluate the ClIK program. This effort will further integrate our research and clinical care communities, provide better care for our patients, and promote a learning healthcare system.
