2015-2016 Learning Health System Champion and Pioneer Research Awards

The Research on Care Community (ROCC) offers the Learning Health System Champion Award to AAMC member institutions that have implemented innovative, system-wide processes that improve the opportunity for research and enhance health system & research collaboration. System-wide processes should advance the development of new knowledge, drive collaboration, engage learners, and enhance improvement within the health system (see previous awardees). Champion awardees will participate in site to site learning and coaching opportunities with the Pioneer award winners. Champion Award winners will receive $5,000 each and travel support to participate in site to site learning opportunities.

The Learning Health System Pioneer Award will be given to AAMC member institutions who identify an interest in developing innovative, system-wide processes that improve the opportunity for research and enhance health system & research collaboration but have not yet fully implemented or significantly scaled up improvements. Applicants from institutions that have critical infrastructure and are developing processes that enhance research and health system collaboration are encouraged to apply. Pioneer award winners will receive $15,000 and additional travel support to participate in site to site learning opportunities.

In addition, both Champion and Pioneer Award winners receive travel support to present their finding at the AAMC's annual Integrating Quality meeting in Chicago. Award trophies and notifications are sent to the principal applicant and CEO or Dean for each award winning institution.

Applications focused on system-wide processes that improve the opportunity for research in the following areas are encouraged:

  • Care Models which incorporate real time data exchange between patients and care teams (e.g., iPhone/android apps, telemonitoring, asthma, diabetes, or other condition tracking);
  • Mobile device apps with health data monitoring and data sharing capabilities; or
  • Electronic Health Record data systems which:
    — Allow for visualization and analysis of EHR data;
    — Facilitate research data capture in clinical workflow;
    — Collect patient reported measures for treatment planning, population management, and research; or
    — Link EHR data with genomic data for research.
