    Integrating Quality Initiative

The AAMC's Integrating Quality (IQ) Initiative's mission is to lead and support AAMC members in achieving safe, high-quality, high-value health care that is driven by continuous quality improvement implemented throughout inter-professional education and clinical practice.

    Our Vision

Academic health systems will lead the nation in quality and safety education, research and clinical performance, to improve the health of all.

    AAMC Integrating Quality Event

The AAMC periodically hosts the Integrating Quality event – the professional development convening for clinical and educational leaders, faculty, educators, trainees, and students from across the health professions in academic medicine who are advancing health care quality, patient safety, and high-value care innovations.

The AAMC is not planning to host a 2024 convening and did not host a 2023 event.

The 2022 Integrating Quality Forum was a virtual-only event and brought together nearly 100 thought leaders, clinical administrators, population health personnel, researchers, and others to focus attention and exchange ideas and views on social needs screening and social determinants of health care. View the Forum website for more information.

Resources for improving clinical quality and integrating education & training into your efforts:

    • IQLink Newsletter (click to register): IQLink is a product of our IQ Initiative that is leading and supporting member institutions in achieving safe, high-quality, high-value health care that is driven by continuous quality improvement implemented throughout interprofessional education and clinical practice. The newsletter provides access to news and updates, recent publications, funding announcements, and professional development opportunities.

    • Academic Medicine: Quality & Safety Collection of Papers: This collection examines quality and safety as it is taught in medical schools and practiced in teaching hospitals. It includes articles about teaching quality and safety to learners, calls for increases in curricula that focus on quality and safety, and research reports providing the results of quality and safety initiatives.

    • Diagnostic Safety Toolkit: With guidance from the Chief Medical Officers’ Group and the Integrating Quality Initiative, the AAMC developed this toolkit to facilitate discussion among clinicians and leaders at teaching hospitals about practical approaches to ensuring that diagnostic testing results are communicated reliably across transitions of care.

    • Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) Competencies: These competencies were developed by leaders from across the medical education and clinical practice communities. The competencies add depth to selected areas to help guide curricular and professional development, formative performance assessment, cross-continuum collaborations, and, ultimately, improvements in health care services and outcomes.
