About Bundled Payments
Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Initiative (BPCI) and National Pilot
Update to the BPCI program:
As of April 18, 2014, the BPCI Open Period is closed.
For AMCs who applied in November 2013 and April 2014:
Your start date is January 1, 2015.
On Friday, February 14, CMMI announced a major new expansion of BPCI to include new hospitals and health systems, as well as physician practices. This is an important opportunity for our Academic Medical Centers to engage in alternative payment programs with minimal risk. The Federal Register link to the expansion notice and the CMMI website are also helpful in describing the requirements to entry. Please find information about the April 2014 open period here .
Under Section 3023 of the Affordable Care Act, Medicare payment bundles are to be implemented in a national pilot beginning in January 2013. Although the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) delayed the implementation of this pilot, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation began a parallel initiative. This effort began in August 2011 and is known as the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) initiative. CMMI released a Request for Applications for BPCI in August 2011; interested organizations were asked to submit a Letter of Intent by Nov. 4, 2011 to apply for four models of bundled payments.
On Jan. 31, 2013, CMS announced participants in Models 1-4 of the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) initiative.
