Table C1. Number of Medical School Graduates, by Last Completed GME Specialty

Medical School Graduation Years 2004-2005 through 2010-2011

The table below displays the number of U.S. MD medical school graduates who completed a residency program in each specialty, by type of medical degree program (e.g., MD-PhD). The data are displayed for the most recently completed ACGME-accredited specialty and subspecialty as of December 31, 2015. For example, for the graduating class of 2010-2011, emergency medicine was the last completed specialty for 1,188 MD graduates, 10 MD-PhD graduates, and 31 graduates with another combined MD-graduate degree. The graduation years are shown in three-year increments, from 2004-2005 through 2010-2011. Individuals who are shown as having completed a residency may be active again in another residency program. Counts shown for specialties do not include counts for the related subspecialties. Please contact residentreport@aamc.org with any comments or questions.

Selected Finding: Looking at the 2010-2011 U.S. MD medical school graduates, 77.5 percent completed at least one residency training program within four years of graduating.
