Figure 12 shows the historical trend of medical school graduates by sex from academic years 1980-1981 through 2018-2019. Similar to the trend mentioned in Figure 1, female and male graduates reached near parity in 2007-2008, after which female graduates were surpassed by male graduates for nearly a decade. However, the gap is closing. In 1980-1981, only 24.9% of graduates were female; in 2018-2019, 47.9% of graduates were female.
