The “MD and PhD or MD and Other Doctoral Degree” break out includes faculty who hold both an MD or equivalent degree and a PhD or other doctoral degree, regardless of whether the degrees were earned simultaneously.
“Other Doctoral Degree” includes doctorates in dentistry, veterinary medicine, public health, optometry, and other fields.
For the purposes of this report, faculty counts are broken out by department classification as opposed to exact department name. By way of background, the Faculty Roster utilizes the official name given to each department by each medical school. The AAMC department classification is a way to group disparately named (but similar) departments across medical schools. As an example, a medical school could have separate departments of Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. These departments would appear in the Faculty Roster under their official names, but both would be reported in the Surgery department classification.
