  • The name “orthopaedic surgery” (a.k.a. orthopaedics or ortho) is misleading. While half of orthopaedic surgeons’ time is spent in the OR, they provide non-surgical treatments as well, says M. Daniel Wongworawat, M.D., program director of the orthopaedic surgery residency program and assistant dean for career advisement at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif. Non-surgical treatments include manipulation, traction, braces, casts, and injections. Additionally, these physicians prescribe exercises and medication as well as order physical and occupational therapy.
