Spotlight on Specialties

  • The overarching focus of preventive medicine (PM) is what distinguishes this specialty from all others. While all physicians promote health and treat disease, physicians certified in PM focus their work on preventive efforts for not only individuals, but also populations. In fact, PM physicians are uniquely trained in public health and clinical medicine so they can understand and reduce the risks of disease, disability, and death and can safeguard and promote health and well-being across all areas of life. As a result of their particular expertise, these physicians typically lead in communities or health settings that bridge the divide between public health and clinical medicine.

PM is defined by a set of core competencies or specialty areas that include biostatistics/epidemiology, management/administration, clinical preventive medicine, and occupational health/environmental health.
