Often referred to as the “cerebral” doctors, neurologists are trained to treat a wide variety of disorders and diseases housed in the brain, spinal cord, and autonomic nervous system. In recent years, neurologists have stepped into the spotlight as the go-to doctors for increasingly prominent diseases in our aging population, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and strokes. As evidence of the escalating need for neurologists, in 2007, 13,400 neurologists were practicing in the United States, up from 10,931 in 1996.
