    Addressing Conversations about Racism, Police Brutality, and Health in the Context of Community-based Medical Education

    After initially removing students form the clinical learning environment in March, medical schools are beginning to return students into community-based clinical settings. Schools who have already returned students to community-based clinical learning environments now have valuable experience to share.

    This discussion featured leaders representing institutions who have already re-started face-to-face clinical training in community-based settings. Presenters will share their experiences to date, relay critical preparation points, and provide advice to colleagues either preparing for re-entry or who are working to overcome active re-entry challenges.

    Participation was intended for anyone involved in community-based education and will include perspectives from both main and regional campuses. It followed a June 4, 2020 webinar, “Returning Students to Clinical Sites: Community-based Settings and Regional Medical Campuses” which focused on planning for clinical re-entry as opposed to lessons-learned. 

    The call began with brief comments from the speakers with most of the time reserved questions from the audience and facilitated discussion. 

    Discussion topics included: 

    •    Adjustments made to initial re-entry plans
    •    Expectations vs reality and unforeseen challenges 
    •    Feedback so far from students, faculty, and staff
    •    Student safety (including PPE)
    •    Communication lessons
    •    Monitoring the status of the pandemic and institutional emergency plans
    •    Realities of the new learning environment

    Initiated by nation-wide events, this discussion focused on recognizing and addressing racism within the context of community-based medical education.

    This call featured community-based campus administration, student, and AAMC perspectives. Ample time will be reserved for questions and discussion.

    The following comments from a June 1, 2020
    AAMC statement on police brutality and racism in America and their impact on health provides a starting point for this conversation,

    “As healers and educators of the next generation of physicians and scientists, the people of America’s medical schools and teaching hospitals bear the responsibility to ameliorate factors that negatively affect the health of our patients and communities: poverty, education, access to transportation, healthy food, and health care.

    Racism is antithetical to the oaths and moral responsibilities we accepted as health professionals who have dedicated our lives to advancing the health of all, especially those who live in vulnerable communities.

    As leaders of anchor institutions in our communities, academic medicine’s physicians, educators, hospital leaders, faculty, researchers, learners, and staff must lead by example and take bold action in partnership with the communities we serve…”

    Returning Students to Clinical Sites: Community-based Settings and Regional Medical Campuses

    After a pausing, medical schools are either restarting or planning to restart student re-entry into clinical training environments. Returning to community-based clinical training sites and the training sites of regional medical campuses merit unique considerations and approaches. This discussion was be led by speakers from different institutions (and with different re-entry timelines) about approaches to student re-entry in these environments. 

    Discussion topics included planning with clinical sites, creation of necessary policies, student safety (including PPE), and realities of the new learning environment.

    How Medical Schools with Regional Campuses are Navigating COVID-19 and Accreditation with the LCME

    Medical schools with regional medical campuses (RMCs) are facing unique challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. RMCs are often located a significant distance from the main campus and frequently feature very different training environments. With the spread of the virus variable from one community to another, many institutions are seeing different situational environments between campuses. As schools are adapting and seeking ways to provide comparable experiences to all of their students, questions related to accreditation may naturally arise. 

    This discussion explored how institutions are navigating these circumstances, interpreting existing guidance, and engaging with the LCME when necessary.

    This discussion featured leaders from the AAMC and Group on Student Affairs (GSA) Committee on Student Records in a discussion on the Coalition for Physician Accountability’s Work Group Report issued on Monday, May 11th and its implications for away rotations. 

    Topics covered included the report’s suggestions for online residency interviews and the revised ERAS timeline, along with plenty of time for questions.
