Print and Digital Publishing: External Audience - Gold
Penn Medicine is the magazine of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (PSOM) and the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS). It’s published three times per year, with a print run of 31,000. In 2021-2022, Penn Medicine sought to engage its busy, potentially COVID-19-weary readers through stories that embrace necessary change to tackle social and racial injustice in academic medicine.
What was the most impactful part of your entry?
Health equity, diversity, and inclusion have continued to take on greater importance, as racial justice movements across the country in the last few years galvanized our institution’s long-standing commitment to these principles. This commitment was front and center in the Winter 2022 issue, in which our feature stories emphasized the complex issue of gun violence — which disproportionately affects people in Black and Brown neighborhoods. In that issue, we also addressed health equity, diversity, and inclusion through the perspectives of majority-Black experts — as well as our institutional commitment to representing and celebrating the history of outstanding Black role leaders, most notably, Helen Octavia Dickens, MD, who was a champion for health equity for young Black women and their families.
What challenge did you overcome?
We reached an inflection point in 2022 where the COVID-19 pandemic was no longer a major driver of our storytelling, yet in reaching a physician audience that is largely exhausted in the wake of the pandemic, we still needed to generate energy and interest in other worthy topics.
