National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council Meeting, and NHLBI Precision Medicine Engagement

Anne Berry, Lead Specialist, Implementation Research & Policy

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council June 12 meeting included an update from National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Director Gary Gibbons, MD, and an update on how the institute is collaborating with the All of Us research program.

Dr. Gibbons highlighted several of the institute’s current areas of focus, including the Women’s Health Agenda and the Sickle Cell Disease initiative. He also spoke about NHLBI’s support of data analysis and referenced the recently-released NIH Strategic Plan for Data Science [see Washington Highlights, June 8], noting that the NHLBI’s TOPMed dataset was included in the NIH Data Commons Pilot.

Dr. Gibbons emphasized the growing potential that precision medicine offers and how NHLBI is collaborating with the All of Us Research Program [see Washington Highlights, May 11]. All of Us Research Program Director Eric Dishman updated the council on the progress of the program, which has approximately 70,000 enrollees and has already collected 1 million biological samples.

Additionally, NHLBI Division of Cardiovascular Sciences Associate Director Gina Wei, MD, MPH, presented on the specific ways that NHLBI is working to advance precision medicine and how it is engaging with the All of Us Research Program. Notably, in July NHLBI will gather stakeholders for a follow-up to the spring All of Us Research Priorities Workshop to discuss research ideas and ways to advance heart, lung, and blood science through the All of Us Research Program.
