Health Profession Organizations Send Letter in Support of POST GRAD Act

June 2, 2017—The AAMC joined 14 health profession organizations on a June 1 letter to Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) in support of the Protecting Our Students by Terminating Graduate Rates that Add to Debt Act (POST GRAD, H.R. 4223).

The letter, organized by the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP), recognizes that “past changes in federal policy have increased the debt burden for graduate students, complicating their path to attaining an advanced degree.” It notes, “Graduate students face higher interest rates, no longer receive an interest subsidy and have a prolonged loan repayment period under some repayment plans.”

The AAMC recently endorsed the POST GRAD Act [see Washington Highlights, May 26], which would make graduate students eligible to receive Federal Direct Subsidized Loans. Graduate student eligibility for Federal Direct Subsidized Loans ended with the signing of the Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA, P.L. 112-25) [see Washington Highlights, August 5, 2011].
