Science Groups Urge White House to Appoint Science Advisor

Tannaz Rasouli, Sr. Director, Public Policy & Strategic Outreach

The AAMC joined 58 organizations on a May 25 letter urging President Trump to make key appointments to his science advisory team.

The letter “strongly encourages” the president to “nominate highly-qualified individuals to serve as Director and in other key roles in the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).” The letter asks the president to fill the positions “as quickly as possible.”

OSTP, which is part of the Executive Office of the President, is charged with directing federal efforts across all science agencies by way of setting science and technology budgets and other priorities. The letter points out that OSTP leadership “plays an important role in enhancing education; advancing knowledge; improving human health and saving lives; strengthening national security; and growing our economy.”
