AAMC Supports Use of Preprints in NIH Grant Applications and Reports

December 16, 2016—The AAMC Dec. 9 endorsed the use of pre-publication research reports, or preprints, in research grant applications and other official reports.

The AAMC’s comment letter was in response to a public request by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for information on the types and use of preprints and other “interim research products” by biomedical researchers.

In its comments to NIH, the AAMC recognized that the preprint trend could be “disruptive” for NIH and academic organizations, but noted that “there are also clear advantages in the potential to disseminate results more rapidly and transparently in all areas of biomedical science that rely increasingly on collaboration.” The AAMC also noted that the “NIH can play a major role in promulgating standards in the use of preprints, including in citation,” but added that the NIH “should encourage such standards to emerge from the community.”
