White House Cancer Moonshot Summit Highlights New Initiatives

Anurupa Dev, Director, Science Policy & Strategy

The Cancer Moonshot June 29 held a summit at Howard University in Washington, D.C., to bring together various stakeholders in cancer research and care and launch public and private sector partnerships to help achieve the goals of the initiative.

The Cancer Moonshot Task Force, an interagency group chaired by Vice President Joe Biden, announced a dozen new federal initiatives, including: making clinical trials more accessible to cancer patients, the creation of a genomic data commons, and accelerating review of cancer patents and products. In addition to these measures, the vice president encouraged participation in the initiative from ordinary citizens, through the platform of Serve.gov.

To determine the best scientific agenda and goals, the Task Force is consulting with a Blue Ribbon Panel of experts, established as a working group of the presidentially-appointed National Cancer Advisory Board. The panel will provide input on the research vision and implementation of the initiative, and plans to release its recommendations in August of this year.
