NRSA Stipends Increase by Two Percent

Jodi (Lubetsky) Yellin, Director, Science Policy

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Jan. 26 issued its fiscal year (FY) 2016 stipend levels for trainees receiving Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSAs). NIH will increase NRSA stipends by approximately 2 percent on average across stipend levels.

The related Jan. 20 NIH Fiscal Policy for FY 2016 Grant Awards Notice notes the 2012 recommendation of the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director Biomedical Research Workforce Working Group to increase NRSA stipends. Stipend levels also increased by about two percent in FY 2015. Amounts for tuition remain unchanged, but the training related expenses and institutional allowance for postdoctoral trainees and fellows are increased by $1,000.
