Eshoo Reintroduces American Cures Act

May 8, 2015—Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) April 29 reintroduced the American Cures Act (H.R. 2104). First introduced in the 113th Congress, the legislation proposes to boost funding for federal agencies responsible for conducting biomedical research: the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Department of Defense Health Program (DHP), and the Veterans Medical & Prosthetic Research Program.

The legislation would increase funding each year for each agency at a rate of GDP-indexed inflation plus five percent. Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), is the lead sponsor of companion legislation in the Senate (S. 289) [see Washington Highlights, Jan. 30].

Reps. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.), Scott Peters (D-Calif.), Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), and Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) are original cosponsors of H.R. 2104.
