Report Quantifies State Impact of Medicaid Expansions

July 11, 2014—The Obama Administration’s Council of Economic Advisers July 2 released a report highlighting the potential impact of implementing Medicaid expansions under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, P.L. P.L. 111-148 and P.L. 111-152).

The report, Missed Opportunities: The Consequences of State Decisions Not to Expand Medicaid, quantifies at the state level: improved coverage, preventive services, and overall health; increased savings for state and local governments; increased financial stability for at-risk populations; and increased economic productivity and employment.

According to the report, states involved in Medicaid expansion “can improve access to essential medical care, reduce financial hardship, improve their citizens’ mental health and well-being, and claim billions of dollars in Federal funding that could boost their economies today.” The Administration adds that it hopes more states “will decide to take advantage of these opportunities” and it “stands make these opportunities a reality.”
