VA Announces Veterans Health Administration Leadership Changes

June 27, 2014— The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) June 25 announced several personnel changes “aimed at accelerating veterans’ access to quality health care and rebuilding the trust of America’s Veterans.” Acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson made the announcements at a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) leadership summit in Washington.

The Department announced that effective July 2, Carolyn Clancy, M.D., will replace Robert Jesse, M.D., Ph.D., as acting undersecretary for health. Dr. Clancy joined the VA in August 2013, serving as the assistant deputy undersecretary for health for quality, safety, and value.  Prior to her appointment at VA, Dr. Clancy, a general internist, served as director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) [see Washington Highlights, Feb. 1, 2013].

Dr. Jesse had recently been named acting undersecretary for health following the resignation of Robert Petzel, M.D. Dr. Jesse’s four-year term as principal deputy undersecretary for health ends July 2.

A commission of health care experts and industry leaders, including AAMC Chief Academic Officer John Prescott, M.D., is in the process of selecting a permanent undersecretary of Health to head VHA. Other AAMC member representatives on the commission include Kenneth W. Kizer, M.D., M.P.H., distinguished professor and director of the Institute for Population Health Improvement at the University of California Davis Health System; and Delos “Toby” Cosgrove, M.D., Cleveland Clinic president and CEO.

The Department also announced that Jonathan Perlin, M.D., Ph.D., chief medical officer and president, Clinical Services for Hospital Corporation of America, will begin a short-term assignment as a senior advisor to Acting Secretary Gibson. Dr. Perlin previously served as VA undersecretary for health and is chair-elect of the American Hospital Association.
