HRSA Merges Workforce Programs Into New Bureau of Health Workforce

June 6, 2014—The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) June 3 announced the establishment of the Bureau of Health Workforce(BHW), a new bureau that will encompass programs and functions previously under the Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr) and the Bureau of Clinician Recruitment and Services (BCRS). Becky Spitzgo, who was most recently the associate administrator of BHPr and formerly the associate administrator of BCRS, will lead the new bureau.

The bureau will oversee the Title VII health professions programs, the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program, the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) program, and faculty and student loan repayment programs.

According to the announcement, BHW’s mission is to improve “the health of the nation's underserved communities and vulnerable populations by developing, implementing, evaluating, and refining programs that strengthen the nation's health care workforce.”

The announcement also notes that BHW programs “holistically support a diverse, culturally competent workforce by addressing components including: education and training; recruitment and retention; financial support for students, faculty, and practitioners, supporting institutions; data analysis, and evaluation and coordination of global health workforce activities. These efforts support development of a skilled health workforce serving in areas of the nation with the greatest need.”
