Senate Confirms Burwell as HHS Secretary

June 6, 2014—The Senate June 5 voted, 78-17, to confirm Sylvia Mathews Burwell as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Burwell, who previously served as director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), received bipartisan support during confirmation hearings in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions [see Washington Highlights, May 9] and Senate Finance Committees [see Washington Highlights, May 23], but faced many questions on issues surrounding the Affordable Care Act (ACA, P.L. 111-148, P.L. 111-152).

AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., issued a statement following Burwell’s confirmation saying, “We are confident that Secretary Burwell will bring a thoughtful, measured approach to tackling the wide range of issues affecting the nation’s health, from funding biomedical research to training the next generation of physicians to transforming the nation’s health care system.”

Dr. Kirch noted that during her confirmation hearing, Burwell expressed interest in working on issues facing AAMC members, including “two midnight” regulations and funding for graduate medical education (GME), and said, “The AAMC looks forward to working with Sec. Burwell on these and other issues vital to improving the health of all Americans.”
