Reps. Upton and DeGette Announce 21st Century Cures Initiative

May 2, 2014—House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Fred Upton (D-Mich.) and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) April 30 announced “21st Century Cures,” an initiative to help accelerate the pace of cures and medical breakthroughs in the United States.

Under the initiative, members of the Energy and Commerce Committee will take a comprehensive look at the research process “from discovery to development to delivery” to identify steps to ensure the nation is taking full advantage of advances in science and technology and “to keep America as the innovation capital of the world.”

In a press release, Chairman Upton notes, “We know we don’t have all the answers. That’s why we’re asking questions first. We are listening. We want to know how to close the gaps between advances in scientific knowledge about cures and the regulatory policies created to save more lives.”

The committee seeks to collaborate with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other agencies, as well as patients, academia, and industry. The committee will accept input through email and social media, and will conduct roundtables and hearings in the coming months.
