HHS OIG Releases 2014 Work Plan

February 7, 2014—The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) Jan. 31 released its work plan for fiscal year (FY) 2014, a compendium of current and new projects the OIG will undertake in the coming year.  The work plan is considered a key to identifying potential compliance risk areas.

Among the projects that are new for FY 2014 are:

  • A determination of whether hospitals’ indirect medical education (IME) payments were made in accordance with federal regulations and guidelines;

  • A review of Medicare cost reports and hospitals to identify salary amounts included in operating costs reported to and reimbursed by Medicare.  The OIG also will determine the impact if the amount of employee compensation had limits; and

  • A review of Medicare outpatient payments made to hospitals for evaluation and management services for clinic visits billed at the new patient rate to determine whether they were appropriate.
