AAMC Encourages House to Act on CHGME Reauthorization

December 6, 2013— The AAMC sent a Dec. 3 letter  to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) requesting that the House consider the Children’s Hospital GME Support Reauthorization Act of 2013 (S. 1557), which the Senate approved Nov. 12 by unanimous consent [see Washington Highlights, Nov. 15].

The bill extends the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program, administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), through 2018. The measure authorizes $300 million for each of fiscal years 2014 through 2018. However, final funding levels for the program are determined in and provided through annual appropriations bills.

AAMC’s letter applauds the House for its past actions on legislation to reauthorize the CHGME program [see Washington Highlights, Jan. 25], and commends the sponsors of the House version of the reauthorization bill, Energy and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) and Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), for their efforts.

Noting the importance of continued support for physician training, the letter urges “the House to take up S. 1557 and pass this important legislation before the end of the year.”
